What is a Keloid?

A Keloid is a scar which occurs when a injury or condition has healed. Keloids can develop due to various skin injuries like:

  • Surgical cuts
  • Acne and chickenpox
  • Burns
  • Body or ear piercings
  • Vaccination shots

They can occur spontaneously in patients prone to develop keloids.
Keloids appear lumpy and are irregular in shape. It is type of scar which exceeds the boundary of the wound. Keloids can further cause tenderness, itchiness and pain.

What are the causes of Keloid?

Keloids are caused due to an excess of protein (collagen) in the skin at the time of healing.

In what age group do Keloid occur?

Keloids commonly occur in the age group of 10-20 years, although it can occur in anybody.

What is the treatment of Keloid ?

Keloids can be removed by a surgical procedure. Apart from surgery keloids can be treated by the following treatments:

  • Corticosteroid injections, which are sometimes combined with external cryotherapy
  • Pressure therapy
  • Laser therapy
  • Silicon-based products, including gels and patchesy

What is the Prevention of Keloid ?

Keloids can be prevented by avoiding the following:

  • Ear piercing
  • Surgery
  • Skin injuries
