What is dandruff and does it cause hairfall ?
Dandruff is a common term used for a chronic skin condition called as Seborrheic dermatitis. This condition is characterized by an oily scalp and white flakes or scales present on it. It can also involve areas other than scalp like face and chest.
What exactly causes seborrheic dermatitis is not completely known but the most common reason is increased production of oil(sebum) from the oil glands (sebaceous glands). Not only oil is produced in excessive amounts but also has an altered composition.
The excess oil that is produced creates an environment which is a favorable for the growth of a fungus called as Malasezzia furfur. This fungus is normally also present on the body surfaces but it is the unchecked multiplication of this fungus in the oily environment on the scalp that causes a lot of inflammation and irritation.
The excess oil combined with the fungal over-growth leads to flakes and a lot of itchiness on the scalp.
Dandruff does not lead to direct hair fall. The inflammation and irritation around a hair follicle superimposed with the scratching of scalp causes undue injury to the hair. The injured hair becomes weak and falls off temporarily. The hair regrowth may ensue again once the irritation and dandruff is under control.
The treatment for dandruff needs to be started early and continued for a long time to keep it under check. It generally involves the use of lotions and medicated shampoos but sometimes oral medications may also be needed.
Consult a qualified and experienced Dermatologist if you are suffering from dandruff and hair fall. An early and appropriate treatment may work in your favour to have good and healthy scalp and hair.
